A class-action lawsuit was recently begun in Canada against Roundup manufacturer Bayer AG (which acquired the company Monsanto – the original manufacturer of Roundup) over claims that Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, may cause various health issues, including cancer, due to their failure to warn consumers of the potential health risks posed by its products. The lawsuit’s Plaintiffs claim suffering from various types of cancer including Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, breast, gastric and brain cancer, leukemia, and renal cell carcinoma.

Background

Monsanto has been manufacturing and marketing Roundup since the 1970s as an effective weed killer and herbicide, which contains glyphosate. It was believed that glyphosate posed a risk only to plants, not to people as glyphosate inhibits an enzyme that humans do not even have. However, in 1996, Monsanto developed and marketed genetically modified seeds that would resist its own herbicide, and the use of Roundup increased exponentially. Due to its increasingly widespread use, glyphosate can be found in water, food, and dust, and it is likely that you or someone you know has been exposed.

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has called glyphosate a “probable human carcinogen,” and in 2017, the state of California added it to its list of cancer-causing chemicals. Due to this designation, several lawsuits in the US have awarded damages in the tens of millions of dollars to the various Plaintiffs in their respective claims after being successfully argued.

What should I do if I believe that my cancer diagnosis is related to my use or exposure to Roundup?

If you have been a user of Roundup or been exposed to Roundup and have been diagnosed with one of the forms of cancer listed above, you have likely faced emotional, mental and physical stress related to your diagnosis and treatment, to say nothing of the financial impacts a cancer diagnosis can have on a person and their family. We at Umbrella Injury Law believe strongly that Bayer AG should be held accountable for their push to downplay the potential health risks associated with exposure to Roundup and promoting Roundup as a safe product and we will work tirelessly to argue for financial compensation for your injuries.
